How Your Home’s Windows Impact Efficiency
Energy-efficient windows are an important consideration for homeowners in Knoxville, Tennessee, with the hot summer months approaching. The type of windows you have will affect the efficiency of your HVAC system. Learn about ways to improve the energy efficiency of your home’s windows and ultimately your HVAC system.
Window Caulk
Gaps between the glass, the window frame, and the window sash can allow hot or cold air to come into your home, forcing your air conditioner unit to work harder than necessary. To avoid this problem, apply caulk as an easy and inexpensive solution to seal the area.
Window Frames
The most common window frame materials are vinyl, wood, and aluminum. Each has its own set of advantages and disadvantages. Aluminum although light, strong, and virtually maintenance-free, conducts heat quickly, making it a poor insulator. Wooden window frames insulate well, but with age, they will weather and need to be maintained.
Vinyl frames, although also almost maintenance-free, can warp and expand at high temperatures. Wood clad with either vinyl or aluminum offers the beauty of wood on the inside but less maintenance on the outside.
Awnings
The U.S. Department of Energy claims that awnings can cut the amount of heat from the sun by up to 65 percent in the summer months for south-facing windows. Awnings can be installed on individual windows or right along exterior walls to reduce the heat gained by the wall.
Low-E Storm Windows
Storm windows that have a low-e coating reflect heat outside during the summer months and heat back into the house during the winter months, keeping your home comfortable. Newer low-e coating reduces the emissions of the glass and the heat transmissions through storm windows.
New low-e storm windows can be fixed in place or removable. They are also efficient because they reduce air leakage. These windows are more cost-effective since they reduce heating and cooling energy costs.
