When to Upgrade Your HVAC System
The HVAC system in your Lenoir City, Tennessee, home is an essential component in maintaining a comfortable indoor temperature, especially when the weather outside starts to change. An HVAC system can typically last for about 10-15 years when properly maintained. When it’s time to replace your unit, be aware of some of the most common warning signs.
Age of Your HVAC System
The first sign to watch out for is the age of your heating and cooling system. As it nears the end of its functional lifespan, which is usually around the 15-year mark, the unit will usually start to lose efficiency and have more issues that require costly repairs. When your system is getting older, be prepared to replace it in the near future. You can also plan ahead by replacing it before it experiences any problems, such as efficiency loss.
Rising Energy Bills
When your energy bills start to rise unexpectedly, your HVAC system could be to blame. Older units aren’t nearly as efficient as newer models, so they can cost you a lot in monthly bills. The cost of heating and cooling your home does fluctuate between seasons, but a major spike from one month to the next often indicates that something isn’t working properly within the system.
Smells and Sounds
An HVAC system will make some noise when it operates, but loud clanking, banging, or squealing noises can all mean that your system needs a checkup. You could have a damaged component that has slipped out of place and is grinding against something else. Unpleasant odors can also mean that something is awry. Some of the most common smells that come from a heating and cooling system include electrical odors, musty odors, and natural gas. All of these smells warrant a visit from an HVAC technician.
